Whose seat is more comfortable? I have a customer who has scoliosis, she is more comfortable on a sport bike but likes cruiser. Her solution was to have both bikes using the sport bike on long trips because it accommodates her back problems better.

It is honestly no secret that sport bikes weren't initally designed for long road trips however the good news is that more comfortable seats are available for the sport touring, sport bike and duo sport riders. Customizing your own seat is not as hard as you think. The good thing about foam is that if you make a mistake, it can be glued by on!

Take a moment to read this information located on this great website which I mentioned in a previous blog: http://www.diymotorcycleseat.com/comfort.htm
Here you will read about the bone structures in our bodies which can cause mild or extensive pain if the seat is incorrectly shaped. Being on a bike away from home and experiencing anything from heat rash to pelvic or tailbone pain is not something to laugh at. This type of pain can become down right debilitating and dangerous because you are no longer concentrating on your riding skills. In short your world becomes centered around your rear!

Narrow seats can put undo pressure on lower extremities area, however this can also be alleviated through the insertion of a gel pad, high quality foam and/or widening the seat platform on the existing pan. Narrow seats can be comfortable when coupled with the correct "lean" position.

If your seat is uncomfortable and you cannot ride for more than 45 min without having to get off to get away from the discomfort OR if by the end of the day you have developed a feeling of being "bruised", I would highly recommend that you do not attempt a long trip until you have had your seat adjusted by a professional. Take the time to find someone in your area who can see you sit on the seat, this type of analysis cannot be done over the phone or by email!

It's the difference from being safe or sore and sorry!

More Information On Seats

Many people either don't have the cash to have their seats adjusted and/or would rather do it themselves. In the last couple of months, I have been busy learning about all kinds of good stuff. One of the topics which was brought to my attention was fitting seats to a rider. Bob, my web guy, wanted me to do his seat but he live about a 12 hour drive from me in Salt Lake City, Utah. Creating a new seat cover is easy, however, adjusting the seat without the person in front of me is more difficult. In essence I need to see your butt and how is fits on the seat!

To ensure a perfect fit I made a suggestion of finding a top quality seat builder/upholsterer in his area. Bob chose to do the seat fit alteration himself and came across a website put up by Charlie Bennett; <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:worddocument> <w:view>Normal</w:View> Charlie has numerous pages on how to adjust your own seat by adding or cutting out foam, information on how to locate and fix pressure points and more. Charlie has taken a huge amount of time in compiling his website which is easy to read and has lots of photos. I highly recommend his site.

After creating the fit Bob wanted he went for a test ride, yep he road on the seat without a cover just to see how it felt. Once he achieved the shape he was after Bob then found Dale Hancock (www.dalehancock.com) whose was work is amazing. Dale would be completing the seat covers as well as back rests for his Royal Star Venture.

The ability to partner with other craftsman is awesome. I meet a lot of interesting people this way and am also able to provide better assistance to my customers. Check out both of the sites mentioned above you'll find them interesting.

Footnote: Dale Hancock has offered to take my skills up a notch by allowing me to learning some of his techniques. So this blog posting is dedicated to seats and how they affect you and your posture which can equal comfort or pain.

Most people get a bike for a variety of reasons: looks (high on the list), speed, affordability, it was a husband hand me down or loyalty to a make/model. What most people do not first look for are the ergonomics of a bike and whether or not it actually fits them.

There are four factors that come into play when it comes to how comfortable a bike will be after say, one hour of riding.

Handle bar position

The position of your mirrors

Location of your feet

Your style of seat.

The best position for a cruiser is sitting up right like you are in a chair with a fairly straight back, flat bottom to the seat and your feet slightly in front of you. This alleviates any pressure on your tailbone because the spine is straight not rolled under. However, cruiser people tend to slouch and chopper people tend to REALLY slouch! Sport bike and dual sport folks .....I'll cover you in another article but don't go away.

You see can spot the cruiser folks rolling down the road with our feet up on our highway pegs, our backs and shoulders rounded, looking somewhat "comfortable".

However what this does to your spine is cause the lower back to roll under you placing pressure on your spine, which places pressure on your tail bone, WHICH sends pain down your legs etc.

There are a few styles of seats out there that, unfortunately, make it VERY uncomfortable for a man. The seat style look somewhat like a sling, up in the front and the back. Sadly enough our man tries to get away from the pain by scooting up or back and in some instances riding on the back of the seat smashing it down, all the while attempting to lessen the torture. Need I say more?

For those of us with uncomfortable seats, after a while, you may start to find yourself doing the "left-right cheek dance" during which time you're hoping to find a comfortable position. What our brain fails to tell us is that the pain in our legs is not coming from our legs. Pain seems to show up away from where it starts.

What to do:
My first recommendation is to ride and think about your butt. Wait for the discomfort to start and 9 out of 10 people will find that the pain/discomfort starts in the area of your tail bone, hips or lower back. This is why the rider will find him or herself constantly repositioning their feet; its basically the only thing we can ajdust while riding.

Next look at your seat, if your seat is styled to be more of a slope than a chair, then you are in a position that will eventually place pressure against your tail bone and this will cause you to slump, adding insult to injury. Your next step is to have your seat adjusted by a qualified person who knows motorcycle seats, but first there are a couple of adjustments you can make on the bike itself that won't cost you a dime or possibly less than a seat make over and can possibly solve your issue.

Raise or lower your handlebars. This can make a world of difference.

Check your mirrors. You shouldn't have to move to see directly behind you. Do not set them to see the corner of your shoulders. Have someone stand about 15 feet behind your bike and then set your mirrors.

Sit on the bike and see where your feet are, under you, behind you or in front of you.

See if your foot pegs have an alternate position which you can move them to or consider purchasing floorboards. These provide a flat surface thus eliminating any points on the bottom of your feet. Floorboards can be pricey however, on a long trip they're awesome.

Is your windshield line above or below your sight line? In other words; are you looking through the windshield, over it or is the edge right in your way. If the top edge of your windshield is in your field of vision, looking into lowering it or having the windshield cut by someone who knows how to cut Plexiglas.

Now your have some homework. Feel free to email me at nanci@shasta.com if you have any questions. It's not a secret to find that as we get older our bodies "shift", whether you get thinner or larger the bottom line is that your jacket may not fit from one season to the next.

So the question of "can you take my jacket in" or "can you let my jacket out" becomes a complicated one. Often times people will gain or loose weight in their mid section or in their shoulders thus causing things to no longer fit right and maybe even become uncomfortable. There are also folks who been given or have bought jackets with sleeves that are too long.

To explain why it is very difficult to alter a motorcycle jacket, I'd be best tell you about how the patterns are made. A quick version is this: the pattern is gauged per size. One pattern can be made bigger or smaller for each size needed. HOWEVER, they are not just widened at the side seams, each pattern piece is made gradually larger thus creating a larger well fitting pattern for each size. (Or smaller, which ever the case may be.)

Being that jackets are complicated pieces you have to picture the shell being created and then the lining and then they are both sewn together. If this is well done, how they both come together should be somewhat of a mystery and the result being a smoothly crafted jacket.

So picture the alteration....Oh My God....you have to start dismantling the jacket alter the appropriate pieces and put it all back together at the cost of generally buying another one.

Still don't want to part with your old friend? The solution then is to check your area for a tailor like at a men's store then see if they can recommend a tailor who works in leather and as I always say, "make sure they KNOW how to work with leather"! They can take meausrements which always assures a great fit in the end.

A bit about my customers

I have the most awesome customers! In the past six years I can hardly remember having had a "difficult" or "rude" customer. The people that come into my shop or who contact me by phone and email are some of the nicest people I have ever met and I don't have a clue as to what most of them look like!

I have several customers who have stayed in touch with me over the years and other who are now personal friends. I have lots of repeat customers who appreciate that I remember them and know their personal tastes.

I have customers like Bill and Dee in Redding, Ca who wouldn't have it any other way than to have me stay in their "hotel motorhome" each year for the city's big bike event. There is Wally in Searcy Arkansas, Chuck in Salem Oregon, Dorathy in San Diego, California, Emilyn in Reno Nevada, Pauline in Napa California, Bonnie in Reno Nevada and many many more.

I can't forget the people who have written thanking me for having sold them evaporative cooling vests which they said truly saved their lives. Or those who thanked me for the advise I gave them on how to do things themselves. It's all very cool.

These folks have become sort of an extended family to me because we keep in touch and its not always about business. They bring to me as much joy as they say my products bring joy to them. Its a wonderful exchange.

So to say that I merely have a business would be to fall short on what it is all about for me. Its an exchange of laughter, being able to share my skills with others and the ability to touch people all over the US, Canada and other countries as well.

It's all so very awesome to me and I thank each person who has ever allowed me to sell them a product and/or make them something that they had been looking for. You guys rock!

Careful, "things" can grow on leather

Leather has a mind of its own. The reason I say this is because its not at all like fabric. Leather can hold moisture which you can pick up from the air not necessarily from rain. When storing any leather garment take care to make sure that it hangs "freely" in a dry room before putting it away. By this I mean don't stick it in the closet or leave it rolled up in a saddlebag until spring. You'll know that you have a mold problem by the smell and color of the leather, it looks kind of dusty almost greenish.

Depending upon the area of the US that you live in, you need to be aware of what can happen to leather in a damp environment. Keep in mind that leather consists of fibers that have been chemically treated in order to preserve the "skin". These fibers can hold moisture and within them mold can start to grow. If left for long periods of time mold can ruin leather or leave it with a smell that you can't get rid of.

There are commercial products that will get mold off of leather or you can do it yourself. Here's how: first using a damp rag wipe the mold off of the garment, preferably outside so you don't breath the mold. Clean all areas which include both the lining and the leather itself. Frequently rinse out your cleaning rag. It does not hurt to use a mild soapy solution like Woolite or even Fiebings Saddlesoap (its the best) then wipe again with another clean rag. After wards, condition your leathers with a good quality cleaner. If using Saddlesoap you get to skip this step.

The most important part is that once you clean the garment you must let it dry thoroughly. A word to the wise: Don't let leather hang too close to a wood stop or furnace...you can fry it like bacon. It then become really ugly! Good luck and remember spring is just around the corner!

On another note

We often times don't stop and think about our communication skills until it's too late. EasyASP Hosting could not provide us with the ability to enlarge photos so that my customers could see the details of my work better. No problem...Bob found another host. In the meantime he asked that I relay our plans for closing our account which was to happen at the end of December. Being that EasyASP Hosting does not have a live body to speak to a very long process was initiated and every web owners nightmare occurred; my site was taken down without my permission.

I would like to blame everything on them but I can't. What transpired was that the important wording stating "Please be aware that we will be closing our account as of the end of December..." was left out of my email and only "we will pay until the end of December" was what they read. Needless to say the site was down for 3 full days and the worst part was that I have lost all of the online exposure which had me up there in the search engines.

What can you do? True if EasyASP Hosting would have real people to speak with the issue could have been resolved the same night it was taken down but when a company chooses to do away with live customer service and go to the world of long drawn out emails a lot is lost. Would I recommend this hosting company to anyone, "NO" especially if you still value the ability to speak to a real person. Onward and upward. :)

Underneath the bad haircut, she's still Riley Marie

It's been several weeks since the Terrorist had her pink tights removed and started her rehab. Those of you who have had an animal in rehab know that you are not only doing your best to cover all of their needs, keep them safe but the hardest part is second guessing what it is that they are going through. The beauty of animals is that they stay present to what is going on at that moment; they don't live in the past or the future.

So after the tights were removed Miss Riley Marie became the center of attention. We live in the country on a steep hill with no level areas to speak of. The vet's instructions called for confinement, walks on a leash preferably on level concrete surfaces. "Oh brother!" I thought in a sarcastic train of thought! Needless to say she had to get tuff pretty quick because there are no options for "walks on concrete" where we live and lucky for us our vet understood this. We did the best we could finding small areas of land that were even the tinniest bit level and there was always one of us who was out with Riley on her leash.

Slowly but surely things have gotten better, except her attitude when she doesn't get her way. Going for a walk and having Pete go out of her sight is not a good thing. Ken has started to let her outside on her own (without Pete) and this seems to be allowing her to strengthen her legs at her own pace. We have one more week to go before her possible final vet check. In the meantime like a muttly dog who tired to look like a poodle, her "hairdo" continues to look bad and the indignant looks we often get from her have not changed.

How the Terrorist Wound Up In Pink Tights

Ok, I'm going to tell you what happened to Riley Marie the little "Terrorist". A week ago on Sunday me, her and Pete the Pit were walking down our driveway which is steep as we live on the side of a hill with lots of acreage around us. The dogs took off running. I had never seen her run so fast as she's always been weak in the hind quarters however, this time she ran so fast that she tore the ACL's in both of her back legs. It was terrible as her back legs just quit working.

On Monday, we located a vet who in short explained that Riley's past set her up for what happened because more than likely as a puppy she was injured, probably by someone pulling her by her legs. Due to the weakness in her legs or "knees" as the vet called them they could either do surgery or put her down. The latter was not an option.

She underwent surgery on both "knees" and they gave her implants, repaired the damage, old and new and removed some arthritic spurs...she's only about 2 1/2.

So I went to pick her up at the vet and between the drugs and her feeling of abandonment, she looked at me with a stare that had to have said, "quit the baby talk voice, where's Ken?" and I knew then she was going to be alright. She seemed vaguely happy to see me but man when Ken got home here is what happened, she rolled over on her back, pink tights in the air, "bikini cut" flashing and let him know he was her pack leader! The photo says it all.

Riley Marie the Terrorist

Pete is my dog and then there is Riley Marie the terrorist, she is Ken's dog. Riley is a terrier mix of some sort. We own a well pump business and she's Ken's constant companion and "pump assistant". She goes everywhere with him and they both come home looking like they just got off another dirty job. Riley and Ken don't care if they get dirty and they both like going to work to get dirty. On the other hand, Pete and I love our comforts. Pete love his fireplace, his bed and blankets, the swamp cooler, the shade in the summer and of course his cookies. Riley would rather roll in cow poop and eat something dead.

Riley is famous and she's had her picture in our local paper for the way she sits in the pump truck. She sits in the front seat of the pump rig with her "elbow" on the door, her legs spread and her belly jiggling as they go down the road. She looks old but she's only two.
She is known to Ken's customers as the dog with the happy wiggle butt and a few have asked if they could have her. We think Riley is one of the cutest dogs around other people have told to Ken; "that's one ugly dog". He laughs and said that he thinks she's beautiful. When we got her from the pound Ken asked why I named her Riley Marie; "because people will think she's ugly and she needs a beautiful name". Now he understands why.

We call Riley, Pete's little sister but its obvious she's not. It just a dog owner's way of personifying their pets and they're right! What is also true is that "Ri-girl" is a terrorist. She drives Pete to distraction, bites his back legs to get him to play, taunts him with her rope, takes up the whole seat in the truck, growls at him if he gets near the cookie she doesn't want and then crawls in bed with him if something scares her. Pete just puts up with it because he can out run her but then last Sunday Miss Riley Marie ran faster than her little legs could carry her and she had a terrible mishap, but I'll write about that later............

Pete the Pitiful-Bull

I'd like to introduce my dog Pete. He has a few other names, all of which he answers to. There is Bubba, Pete Bull, Bubby, Boy Boy, and the list goes on. Pete came from the pound. We don't know exactly how old he is but he hd fallen out of a truck and was found hurt and homeless. The lady who found him wanted to keep him but his vet bills were too high and so she turned him over to the pound.

One vet said he was 9 months the other said he was almost 2 yrs old. Still he is Mr Awesome but let me back up. I was scared to death of him when Ken's brother brought him to us. The reason we got him is because our little dog Andy, met an untimely death at the hands of the local "choir boys" aka the coyotes and so did our other little dog Cricket.

Ken made the decision that he was going to get a dog that no coyote was ever going to fool with or hurt for that matter so he had his brother pick out a pitbull and Ron picked Pete. I had heard all the pit bull horror stories and was sure I'd wake up with his jaws around my neck only after he had eaten the cats and killed my husband as well. ........

I'll tell you more about this amazing friend of mine as time goes one but first, you'll need to know that Pete loves blankets, soft rugs, cookies and his "pack leader" more than anything in the world. He is also afraid of small dogs that bark at him.

I made him a sweater or 2 or 3 during the first winter that we had him. One afternoon in my shop he kept staring at me and I realized that his teeth were rattling in his mouth because he was so cold. I didn't know that Pits get cold because they have very little hair and in his case very little fat. Here is he is in front of the fire place in his sweater, a happy dog. This is my wonderful friend.

It's Show Time!

I think Bob knew that when you are dealing with an artist, "Show Time" may never come around because....there will always be one more tweak that must be made, one more photo that has to be added and it just doesn't work that way. So when he Skyped me and said "We're going live tonight" as I was heading out the door all I could do was pray. I left for my lady riders meeting knowing the site was live and knowing that one more tweak was not going to happen before it went live. Show Time was here and from here on out we were going to be working everything while on stage!

So since I last wrote about the new website in August I've learned a bunch. It's still a bit fuzzy but as repetition is the best teacher, it's starting to sink in. I'm sure Bob is enjoying having me do so many of the things that I would just toss at him never knowing what it entailed. Thanks for your patience Bob, the university students in Salt Lake City are very lucky to have you as their professor.

Wow, a new and improved website!

Bob has been teaching me how to work with, not against, my new website! It's a lot more fun than I thought. Still, I'm only doing simple things but at this point they feel huge. The goal is for me to get to the point where I can manage it myself and only rely on him for "the big stuff". Bob came up with a background color that I really like which matches my new business card, the road sign for my house and my truck. It's all coming together nicely.

It's hard to imagine that this coming March, Ace High Leathers will be celebrating is 5th year in business. Have I experienced a learning curve? OMG! I have learned more about my self than I could have imagined. I have met more wonderful people all over the US and Canada than I could have imagined. I have received emails from Ireland, Australia, Italy and Germany AND there's more to come.

Please keep checking the site because in a minute, it will be transformed and even better than what you see now! H-H-H-H-ell0! So let me catch you up on what is going on here. First off I've been working with Bob, my wonderful web guy and there is a new site around the corner. It's slow going for two reasons: one, I am clueless in certain aspects of websites and two Bob is a university professor and father extraordinaire and so together we make slow but steady progress. The reason for the change in the site is so that I can edit articles and add photos to my hearts content. My current site was created by Bob and it is a bit beyond a novice like myself.

My work continues to change. It keeps getting better and more interesting. With that I will bring some new photos and new products to the site for everyone to look at. One of the new pages what will appear on the new site is the "Cool Stuff for Sale" page. This page will feature ready to ship products, one of a kind items and also sale items. It should be a fun page in that you will have to hurry to make sure you get the items before they are gone.

Also, the gallery will be very expansive and will show the many phases of work that I do. I have over 500 photos so keep checking back as once I figure out just how to get these puppies up on the site, I'll have my work cut out for me!

Many thanks to Bob Trim who, over the past 5 years has been patient above and beyond the call of duty along with being my head cheerleader with a lot of "atta girl" shouts! Thanks Bob!

Happy New Year to everyone. It's New Year's Eve and a white one for those of us located just below the Oregon border in California. Who knows what the weather will be like in a week, we could even wind up with an Indian summer.Looking back on the past year, I can only say that I have learned a vast amount about Ace Highs business side. A business is like a growing entity that needs nurturing, integrity and focus. It's like riding a bike; a fine balance between focus and total enjoyment, you need to have both and they should be a team.

Product wise I've expanded. I have found a new interest and passion which is making luggage such as trunks for not only bikes for traveling in general. I now have on my wish list a bigger stronger sewing machine that can handle the type of heavy leathers I want to work on this coming year. You'll no longer see boot stirrups on our "Other Cool Stuff" page. I've ventured further into alterations and I'm proud to be an affiliate of Fox Creek Leather who continually sends customers to me.

Bob Trim aka "Mr Wizard" is working on totally new site. The reason for this is simple, it's time for me to take charge of the site and make changes as I see fit. I'm very anxious to do so as I will be able to change photos as needed, add descriptions and "tweak" things over a cup of coffee in the morning.

Customer wise I can only say that I continue to be approached by a high quality of people who are looking for the customer service that I provide; one on one. You folks out there are the ones who have kept me going over the past 4 years and I've been privileged to serve you by putting your ideas on leather. In return many of you have given me new ideas for products and your feedback has allowed me to improve my techniques and quality.

This coming year is going to mark my 5th year with Ace High Leathers. I have no idea just what kind of adventure I'm going to be embarking on but it will be fun to reflect back at the end of next year. Blessings to each of you in the coming year and thank you for being a part of my business.

Hi Everyone! This is my first posting on my first blog site! My awesome web guy Bob, gave me "full rein" so that I can "write to my heart's content" and this will make both of our lives not only easier but will give you a chance to "talk" back to me as well.

One of the things that I wanted to start off with is winter time and how our apparel suddenly just doesn't fit right. Of course, it may have something to do with amount of layers we have underneath them. Cold weather riding can be a nice experience but the bulk can also restrict your movement and cause you to loose "touch" with your controls. While leaving a gas station I almost dropped my bike a few weeks ago because the gloves I had on were not only bulky but the fingers where too long.....ooops pop went the clutch in first gear. So please make sure you do a dress rehearsal with any winter glove before you head out.

Now let's talk about jackets, coats and chaps. Ok, so you are now fully dressed and look like the Michelin Man. Word is getting out through my buddies at Fox Creek Leathers that I make zipper extensions for jackets and vests. (They make zipper extensions for FCL chaps). I can make any length of extension you might need. It's a pretty cool thing to keep in your saddlebags and are easily removed. A jacket extension will give you the movement necessary to bundle up and maintain your flexibility, just like chap or vest extensions. All extensions include shipping: chaps are $55 a pair, jackets are $35 and vests are $35. Give me a call or email me. I'd like to hear from you!

Sept 2009

Date: Sept '09
It’s interesting how birds of a feather flock together! My advertising budget isn’t the greatest so I’ve found that through my customers and contacts I’ve made along the way, word is getting out. I have made two “email buddies”, both share my passion: creating wonderful things out of leather. These two ladies are not just down the street from me... we’re states apart!
Bev Jones of Bev Jones Saddlery lives in Wisconsin and Denice Langley of Denice Langley Leather and Silver lives in Colorado. Here are two women who I have never met but have shared their passion for leather work with me via emails and phone calls.
The interesting thing is that they both know that I specialize in the “iron horse world” and they are of the “real horse world”! Sharing ideas and swapping patterns is what it’s all about, not competition for orders and customers. We all know that our work is as unique as the leather smith creating the order. As a result of making my own, doing that soon turned into its own business. Much the same has happened with my leather. My first leather sewing machine was purchased so that I could make my own 'fancier' show chaps for cutting and as a result of them I received orders for several other pairs that ended up paying for that machine and the next heavier machine which in turn has led to an entire room full of tools and machinery.
